Product Overview

Vitamin K2, scientifically known as menaquinone, is a fat-soluble nutrient essential for activating proteins that regulate calcium metabolism, directing it to bones rather than blood vessels. It significantly supports cardiovascular health by preventing vascular calcification and enhances bone density. Key sources include fermented foods (natto) and animal products, particularly in MK-4 and MK-7 forms

Forms of Vitamin K2

The"MK"stands formenaquinone, and the number refers to the length of its side chain. The two most important forms for human health are:
MK-4:Found in animal products (egg yolks, butter, liver, dark chicken meat). It has a short half-life (hours), so it needs to be consumed regularly.
MK-7:Derived from bacterial fermentation. Found in natto (a Japanese fermented soybean dish, which is the richest source), aged cheeses (like Gouda), and sauerkraut. It has a much longer half-life (days), leading to more stable and sustained blood levels, making it the preferred form for supplements.

Bone Health: Improving Bone Density and Strength

K2 works synergistically with Vitamin D and calcium.
Mechanism: K2 activates osteocalcin, a protein that binds calcium and integrates it into the bone matrix.
Benefit: This ensures calcium is used to mineralize and strengthen bones, improving bone density and reducing the risk of fractures and osteoporosis. It's particularly important for postmenopausal women.

Cardiovascular Health: Preventing Arterial Calcification

Mechanism: K2 activates Matrix Gla Protein (MGP), a powerful inhibitor of calcification in blood vessels and heart valves.
Benefit: By activating MGP, K2 helps keep arteries soft and pliable, reducing the risk of arterial stiffening (atherosclerosis), hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Large population studies, like the Rotterdam Study, have linked higher K2 intake to a significantly lower risk of heart disease and mortality.

Dental Health

Mechanism: Osteocalcin, activated by K2, also plays a role in dentin, the calcified tissue beneath tooth enamel.
Benefit: It supports tooth mineralization and may help prevent cavities by promoting overall oral health.
  • Vitamin K1 VS vitamin K2?

Vitamin K1 is also known as phylloquinone, while K2 is known as menaquinone.

Vitamin K1 deficiency is very rare, even said to be “almost nonexistent,” while K2 deficiency is much more common.

Vitamin K1 is more abundant in foods but less bioactive than the vitamin K2.

Vitamin K1 is found in mostly vegetables, while K2 is found in mostly animal products or fermented foods.

When we eat foods with K1, vitamin K1 mostly makes it to the liver and then the bloodstream once converted. K2, on the other hand, gets distributed to bones and other tissues more easily.

  • What the difference between vitamin K2 and MK7?

K2 is a group of menaquinones compounds, which are abbreviated as “MK.” MK7 is one type of menaquinones that is responsible for many of the benefits attributed to vitamin K2.

  • What food contains vitamin K2?

Animals help transform vitamin K1 into K2, while humans do not have the necessary enzyme to do this efficiently. So human need to get K2 directly from animal-derived foods, especially the grass-fed animal products provides the most K2.
