Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a fat-soluble, vitamin-like compound produced naturally by the body and found in every cell, crucial for mitochondrial ATP energy production and acting as an antioxidant. Levels decrease with age, disease, or statin use. It's also known as ubiquinone (pronounced you-bee-qui-none), a name that comes from the word "ubiquitous," meaning "found everywhere," because it is present in nearly every cell of your body.

Forms of Coenzyme Q10

Ubiquinone: This is the oxidized form. It's the most common and generally less expensive form. The body must convert it into its active form to use it.
Ubiquinol: This is the reduced, active antioxidant form. It's more readily absorbed by the body, especially in older adults whose ability to convert ubiquinone may be diminished. It is generally more expensive.
