 Vitamin D2, chemically known as ergocalciferol, is an open-ring steroid formed when the chemical bonds of steroids are broken under photochemical reactions, and it can specifically be produced through the action of ultraviolet light on ergosterol.


Its main effects and mechanisms of action: Vitamin D2 helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus from food by activating calcium-binding proteins in the intestines. Adequate levels of calcium and phosphorus are essential for bone mineralization, can prevent rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, and reduce the risk of osteoporosis in the elderly.
