Product Overview

Povidone-iodine API, also known as PVP-I or polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine,it is a yellowish-brown or reddish-brown amorphous powder and soluble in water and ethanol (96 percent) but practically insoluble in acetone. It is one of the most widely used antiseptics and disinfectants in the world, known for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and spores.

The antimicrobial activity of povidone iodine is attributed to free iodine (I₂), which is released from the complex in a controlled manner. Free iodine rapidly penetrates microbial cell walls and oxidizes essential proteins, enzymes, and nucleotides, leading to cell death.

Wound Care and First Aid

PVP-I is widely used in both clinical and home environments for managing wounds.
1. Acute Wounds: It is applied to cuts, scrapes, and abrasions to prevent infection.
2. Chronic Wounds: It is used in the management of ulcers (diabetic, venous stasis, and pressure ulcers) to reduce bacterial load and promote healing.
3. Burn Treatment: It is frequently used on minor burns to prevent infection, though its use on major burns is carefully controlled due to systemic absorption risks.

Medical and Surgical Settings

PVP-I is the "gold standard" preoperative antiseptic in many hospitals.
1. Preoperative Skin Preparation: It is applied to the patient's skin before an incision to sterilize the area and prevent surgical site infections (SSIs).
2. Surgeon’s Hand Scrub: Surgical teams use it for preoperative hand disinfection to eliminate transient flora and reduce resident flora.
3. Insertion Site Preparation: It is used to clean the skin before inserting intravenous lines, catheters, or drains to prevent bloodstream infections.

Veterinary Medicine

1. Wound Treatment: Used for cleaning wounds and abrasions in pets and livestock.
2. Hoof Care: Used in cattle and horses to treat and prevent hoof infections (like foot rot or thrush).
3. Surgical Preparation: Used for preoperative skin prep in animal surgeries.
4. Teat Dipping: In dairy farming, it is used as a teat dip after milking to prevent mastitis.
