Product Overview

D-Mannitol is a type of sugar alcohol (also known as a polyol) that is naturally found in many plants and exudates, including trees like the manna ash (from which it gets its name), seaweed, and fruits like olives and figs. It is an isomer of sorbitol, meaning it has the same chemical formula but a different structure.

Chemically, D-Mannitol is a white, crystalline solid powder that tastes about half as sweet as sucrose (table sugar).

Pharmaceutical

Mannitol- Its inertness, non-hygroscopic nature, and sweet taste make it an ideal excipient (an inactive substance that serves as a carrier for the active ingredients).
1. As a Diuretic and for Kidney Health: In a hospital setting, mannitol is administered intravenously. It acts as an osmotic diuretic, meaning it pulls fluid from tissues into the blood, which is then filtered by the kidneys and excreted as urine.
2. As an Excipient in Tablet Formulation:  It adds bulk to tablets to make them a practical size. It improves the taste of chewable and orally disintegrating tablets, with its cooling sensation enhancing the overall experience.

3. As a Bronchodilator Challenge Agent: Inhaled mannitol is used in a diagnostic test (e.g., Aridol test) to assess airway hyperresponsiveness, helping to diagnose asthma.

Food Industry

In the food sector, mannitol is valued as a healthy alternative to sugar and for its functional properties.

1. Sugar-Free and Low-Calorie Sweetener: It is used in "sugar-free" candies, chocolates, chewing gum, and baked goods.

2. Anti-Caking Agent: Its non-hygroscopic nature is a major advantage. It can be dusted onto sticky foods (like dried fruits or confections) or added to powdered mixes to prevent them from clumping together by absorbing moisture from the environment.

3. Texture and Cooling Effect: In chewing gum and mints, it provides a sweet taste and a distinctive cooling sensation on the tongue, which enhances the minty flavor.

4. Chocolate Manufacturing: It is used in sugar-free chocolate, as it can withstand the high temperatures of the conching process without caramelizing or breaking down.

Personal Care and Cosmetics

1. Toothpaste and Mouthwash: It adds a sweet taste without promoting cavities (non-cariogenic), improving the flavor of oral care products.
2. Skin Care: It can act as a humectant (attracting moisture) and a soothing agent in creams and lotions, though it is less common than glycerin or sorbitol.
